What is Biblical Discipleship?
What is biblical discipleship? Biblical discipleship is simply the process of allowing the Holy Spirit to shape you as you strive to become more like Christ by taking on His attitude and behaviors, and then sharing with others how this process is changing you.
This is a concise definition, however, there are five separate parts of this definition that you need to follow if you want to bear fruit as a Christian. So let's start looking at the first part of this definition in this blog.
Discipleship is simply the process of allowing the Holy Spirit to shape you…
The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is vital to our goal of becoming more like Christ. The second part of John 15:5 says … “For apart from me you can do nothing.” Becoming more like Christ is not about will power, because that will eventually fail. It is about relying on the power of the Holy Spirit. It is about leaning on the power of God.
Jesus said to Nicodemus in John 3:6, that the Holy Spirit gives birth to our spiritual life. So for us to grow spiritually and become more like Jesus Christ, then we need God’s power to make that transformation.
Jesus also said that when the Holy Spirit comes, he will guide us in all truth. And Paul said in Romans 2:29, and I paraphrase, that a changed heart is produced by the Holy Spirit. And when we get this changed heart, we care more about what God thinks about us than what men think. When we have the Holy Spirit’s help, we have all the power we need to help us become more like Christ.
The Bible tells us in Romans 8:11, that the Holy Spirit raised Jesus from the dead, and a few verses later the Apostle Paul says that same power from the Holy Spirit gives us the strength to fight our sinful nature, which again brings us closer to becoming like Jesus. I like that because, while the Holy Spirit is transforming us here in this life, we never become sinless, but we do sin less.
The bottom line is that we cannot become more like Christ without the help of Holy Spirit.
This is a great place to end this week’s Dish on Discipleship.
In our next blog, we will look at passion to become more like Jesus, which by the way should be every Christian’s desire.
